How to delete an exam
Before you start
- You need access to the site where the patient and exam live.
- Your role must allow deletion. These roles can delete an exam: Practitioner, Reader, Nurse, Practice Admin. View-only roles (Viewer) cannot.
- You can't delete a signed exam. A signed exam is frozen, and the delete option is hidden. To delete it, a Reader must unsign the exam first, then delete it.
How it works
Deleting an exam removes the exam and all the images and information in it from view. It's gone from the patient's examinations list and from the worklist for everyone at your site, not just you.
You can't undo a deletion yourself, and there's no in-app restore. If you need a deleted exam back, your practice must contact Sonio Support, and a Sonio Solutions Engineer can restore it.
Before you delete, make sure an exam is what you want to remove. There are three different actions, and they aren't interchangeable:
- Delete an exam: removes the whole exam, including every image and all its information.
- Delete a single image: removes just one image and leaves the rest of the exam intact. Use this when only a few images are wrong.
- Delete a patient: removes the patient and all of their exams.
If you only need to re-take images, don't delete the whole exam. Delete the incorrect images, then re-acquire them from the machine.
Step-by-step: Delete an exam
- Open the patient's record from the patient page.
- In the examinations list, find the exam you want to delete.
- Open the exam's three-dot (more) menu.
- Select Delete examination.
- A confirmation dialog appears, titled "Are you sure you want to delete this examination?" with the text "You will delete all the images and informations associated with this examination."
- Select Confirm deletion to delete the exam, or Cancel to keep it.
- You'll know it worked when the exam is gone from the examinations list. There's no success message; the exam simply disappears from the list.
💡 Tip
If only a few images are wrong, you don't need to delete the whole exam. Delete just the incorrect images instead, then re-acquire them from the machine.
⚠️ Warning
Deleting an exam can't be undone from within Sonio. Once you confirm, the exam and all its images and information are gone from view. To recover a deleted exam, your practice must contact Sonio Support so a Sonio Solutions Engineer can restore it.
Examples (when to use this)
- An exam was created for the wrong patient and has no images worth keeping, so you delete it and start fresh on the correct record.
- A duplicate exam appeared on the worklist and is cluttering the patient's record, so you remove the duplicate.
- An exam was opened by mistake and never used, so you clear it to keep the worklist accurate.
Common questions / troubleshooting
I don't see the delete option in the menu. Why?
Two common reasons. First, your role may not allow deletion. Only Practitioner, Reader, Nurse, Practice Admin, can delete an exam. Second, the exam may be signed. A signed exam is frozen, and the delete option is hidden.
The exam is signed. How do I delete it?
You can't delete a signed exam directly. A Reader, Practice Admin, or Site Admin must unsign the exam first, then delete it.
A deleted exam reappeared on the worklist. What happened?
This usually happens when the same study is sent again from the ultrasound machine. Re-sending the study flips the exam back to active. If you still don't want it, delete it again, and avoid re-sending the same study.
I deleted the wrong thing. What now?
If you deleted an exam you needed, contact Sonio Support to have it restored. If you meant to delete only an image rather than the whole exam, see the related guide on deleting an image.
